Best Games About Dragons

Legend Of Dragoon

Now available on PSN, Legend of Dragoon is one of the best dragon games

Despite mixed critical reception, Legend of Dragoon remains one of the best games for dragon lovers. The Legend of Dragoon has three playable modes: battle mode, field map and world map. The world map is like a series of dotted lines that let you journey between areas. The field map is used in town and dungeons; this is the map where you get to meet characters and see the (at the time) gorgeous graphics. Finally, the battle mode is a 3D area in which you fight enemies in turn based combat.

The dragons come into play through Dragoon Spirits, which allow characters to morph in their Dragoon. Dragoons are elemental (light, earth, fire, thunder, dark, divine, water and wind), these determine the abilities you have to fight with.

Legend of Dragoon is now available on PSN, so you no longer have to whip out your old PSX to play it ūüėÄ

Spyro the Dragon is one of the few games on this list that makes dragons look cute.

Spyro the Dragon: Making dragons super cute

Insomniac Games’ Spyro the Dragon is a Playstation platformer now available on PSN. In it you play as Spyro, a purple dragon (and one of the most popular dragons ever) who is teamed with his friend Sparx.

At the beginning of the game we discover that the five dragon families, who used to live peacefully and in harmony with each other, come under attack from Gnasty Gnorc. Gnasty Gnorc attacks the dragon realms with spells and traps all the dragons except for Spyro. So, Spyro to the rescue!

With this backstory and your mission to save the dragons you play through different realms in which you have to collect a certain amount of different items.  The realms, as you would expect, become gradually more difficult, going from extremely easy to fairly hard.

Spyro the Dragon has the ability to breathe fire and to glide between platformers using his wings. In some levels you also get to fly (which you’ll have to do while avoiding obstacles like planes).

Being super cute and highly playable, Spyro is a good game for kids (as well as older gamers who love retro platform games).

Capcom’s Breath of Fire SNES. PS1, PS2 and mobile devices is our 8th favourite dragon game.¬†

Breath of Fire remains a favourite dragons game despite being originally released in 1993.

Capcom’s Breath of Fire is a role playing game that began life on the Super Nintendo way back yonder in 1993. Since then its seen sequels as rereleases on numerous devices, all of which are notable for their inclusion or recurring characters and slightly iffy continuity.

Breath of Fire stars Ryu and Nina. Ryu is an adventurer who has the ability to morph into various types of dragons, similar to Legend of Dragoon. Nina is a girl with wings. The two become friend quite early on and they journey together through a medieval-style fantasy world.

Breath of Fire is similar to many of the early 90s Japanese RPGs in both gameplay and artwork. Though the Japanese version of the game featured very different graphics, it remained largely the same game when translated for the West.

Five different Breath of Fire games have been released over the years on various consoles, mobile devices and PC.

Dawn of the Dragons is one of the best Dragon-Related MMO

I normally not a massive fan of free-to-play games simply because their marketing model leads people to begin playing, wherein they end up spending tons on superfluous content. It’s an¬†aggressive¬†marketing strategy I’m not a big fan of. But with Dawn of the Dragons I’m willing to make an exception.

Dawn of the Dragons is probably the best dragon-related free-to-pay MMO in the world. The creation of independent game developer 5th Planet Games,   Dawn of the Dragons is available on Facebook, Kongregate, Newsgrounds and Armor Games.

So, if you fancy playing a free and high quality dragon game, head over to one of those sites. But be warned, you’ll probably end up spending a ton.

Dragon Age Origins is one of the most loved dragon games in the world

A third-person RPG, Dragon Age Origins is the creation of games develop BioWare Edmonton and is the first game in the Dragon Age series. The game was released in 2009 on PX, PS3 and XBOX 360.

Dragon Age Origins is set in Ferelden, a fictional kingdom which is suffering from civil strife. You pick up the role or either a rogue, mage or warrior of a human, dwarven or elven background. It’s your mission to defeat an army of demonic forces.

Dragon Age Origins literally set game reviews alight, receiving hefty praise. Critics loved pretty much every part of the game, even awarding it with awards for “Best PC Game” and “Best MMO.”

Dragon Age Origins-Awakening was later released as an expansion back in 2010, and Dragon Age II in March 2011. Bioware is now working on the next installment of the game.

Dragonvale is the one and only simulation-style Dragon game in our list.

The 5th Best Dragon Game: Dragonvale

Backflip Studios iOS and Android game Dragonvale is a simulation title and the only one of its kind in our list. The game is available for iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and Android and is available through Google Play and the App Store.

Released in 2011, Dragonvale is a freemium game, meaning it’s free to play but has purchasable content that helps you to evolve your dragon park quicker.

Dragonvale is a multiplayer online social networking game in which you can add friends and attempt to achieve the highest score. You’ll also get to build your own dragon theme park and visit your friends’ parks too.

Dragon’s Dogma is a Dragon game that is half survival horror and half hack n slash.¬†

Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma achieves a highly respectable 4th in our list of the best dragon games.

Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma is an action RPG game developed and published by Capcom (who made many of the entrants in our list of the ¬†best dragon games). It’s available on PS3 and XBOX 360.

Dragon’s Dogma is set in a fantasy open world with gameplay that is half hack n slash, half survival horror (which isn’t surprising when you consider that it was made by a team who worked on Devil May Cry, Breath of Fire and Resident Evil).

In Dragon’s Dogma you pick your choice of either a warrior, fighter, ranger, strider, mystic knight, sorcerer, assassin or magic archer (you can also choose their appearance and gender). ¬†These classes all have different abilities that change you way you play through the world. You’ll also get three accompanying party members.

Your team set ¬†you’ll journey through the world increasing the stats of your team while encountering numerous foes. ¬†Dragon’s Dogma play out like a cross between Monster Hunter and Oblivion and has a huge open world with tons of characters and enemies.

Dragon’s Dogma is one of the most original and best dragon games of all time. But what’s about number three?

Monster Hunter comes in at number 3. . .  and as this list shows, Capcom pretty much own dragon games. . .

I had no idea quite how dominant Capcom were in the realm of dragon games until I made this list. . . Dragons Origins, Dragons Dogma, Monster Hunter. .  . some other video game developers really need to put the effort into making quality dragon games. . .

Anyway, Monster Hunter is a fantasy action adventure game that began life on the Playsation 2. In it, you play a hunter in a fantasy world who goes seeking out monsters to hunt and capture (basically making it the much more mature version of Pokemon). The series now has PSP games and a MMO.

Monster Hunter is a massively popular franchise, most particularly in Japan though around the world too. ¬†This popularity has led Capcom to develop several sequels including Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Monster Hunter Portable 2ng and 3d and Monster Hunter Frontier Online. There’s even an anime. So, if you become a fan of Monster Hunter, you know you’re going to be well fed.

¬†While not¬†necessarily about dragons, Witcher ¬†Assassin’s of Kings contains some awesome beasts and is simply too good a game not to earn this spot at number 2.¬†

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is a Projekt RED action RPG game for XBOX 360, iOS and PC and is the sequel to 2007’s The Witcher. The game is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books and has become one of the most critically acclaimed and highest selling games of recent times.

The Wicher 2 is noticeably different to its predecessor. This time, you move using the keyboard only and the combat is much faster than before.  You have the ability to use ranged weapons and lay traps and have tons of offensive and defensive moves making combat truly excellent.

Of course, it’s the dragons you’re interested in. While Witcher 2 doesn’t have as many dragons as the other games in this list, it makes up for it with a massive and truly epic dragon fight that is one of the best dragon moments in any game.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim: The Best Dragon Game Ever

The genius work of video game developer Bethesda Software, Skyrim is one of the best games of all time and (arguably) the best RPG ever (again, arguably, debate it in the comments section below).

Released in 2011 and available on PC, Playstation 3 and XBOX 360, Skrim tells the story of a player character who wants to slay Aluin, a Dragon who, according to prophecy, will destroy the world.

There are so many reasons why Skyrim is the best dragon game ever. To start with, it contains some of the best dragon designs of any game (the dragons are a lot more believable than in most titles). It’s also a visually beautiful game. Add to this an epic story, perfect gameplay and an extremely generous longevity, and you soon recognise the brilliance of Skyrim.

If you love dragon games and you haven’t played Skyrim yet, there are two things you need to do. The first is to slap some sense into yourself. The second is to pick up this game right NOW and start playing it. Trust me, you are going to love it.
