Dungeon Plunder iPad / iPhone Game Review

Dungeon Plunder is an interesting concoction of gameplay elements, being slot machine, RPG and roguelike all in one. Do all those elements come together to make one splendiferous gaming cocktail, or do they clash like Jager and Mayo (which is the ingredients for a disgusting cocktail called a “Smokers Cough,” in case you’re wondering).

Anyway, my bad analogies not withstanding, is Dungeon Plunder good or not?

I’m going to go ahead and get the bad news out of the way first. The combat in Dungeon Plunder has all the pace of a slug with a zimmerframe. Thankfully, that’s pretty much the only bad news as the rest of this game is great.

In Dungeon Plunder, an evil wizard wants to turn the world into ice and you must stop him, using either a rogue a warrior or a mage (the characters are overly familiar and generic). Anyway, you pick your character and a rune and then you enter combat on a random map. The combat takes place around a slot machine which is pretty complex to explain. Essentially symbols are shown on the machine’s reels and if you match two or more of any symbol you win more of whatever that symbol is. . . see, I told you it was hard to explain.

Thankfully, this game is a heck of a lot easier to play than it is to describe in words.  Suffice to say that the system is highly playable and easy to get to grips with. Oh, and it’s pretty darned unique too.

So, with this system in place you’re off wondering through dungeons, fighting a ton of enemies and nabbing treasure. At the end you die, having earned  a high score. Then you play again as the next character.

Some elements of Dungeon Plunder could use a bit of polish. The characters could use more flair and the game could play quicker. But those are minimal things in a game which is both deep and very unique. It isn’t easy for a video game developer to create something genuinely new these days. Dungeon Plunder achieves that, and despite the odd hiccup, it doesn’t a darned good job of it.
