Dust: an Elysian Tail: A Gorgeous Charm of an Action-RPG

The release of Dust: An Elysian Tail brings to conclusion an amazing development story. Originally an animated film before turning into a stunning 2D action-RPG, Dust: An Elysian Tail is the creation of one man (or genius): Dean Dodrill. Dodrill has created a masterful piece of work. Dust: An elysian Tail is a visual delight that pays homeage to 16 and 32-but action-RPG adventures. The action takes place in a large, open-world, stacked full of gorgeous characters and a design that invites investigation. It contains a veritable bounty of quests and missions that keeps the action rolling seamlessly. It even includes references to gaming lore that will delight gamers. This is one of the best games you will find on XBLA.

Dust: An Elysian Tail’s Graphics and Story

Dust’s story has a childlike joy about its simplicity that serves to truly invite the player into its beautiful world and, though it lacks the sense of scale or importance to elevate it to the upper echelon of gaming’s dramaturgy, there is enough to grant the player a sense of involvement in the narrative.

The visuals are a real charm, from the anthropomorphic furry creatures to the picture-book feel of the scenery. The fact that it was all near single-andedly created by Dodrill truly is a bewildering fact.

Dust: An Elysian Tail’s Gameplay

The gameplay in Dust matches the story in simplicity. The X button “Wages War.” It’s fair to say you’ll be jamming that button a few thousand times on your journey as, despite featuring some combos and auxiliary techniques, you’ll down most of your foes with that single button. This might sound dull, but thanks to loot drops and an excellent crafting system, the action is surprisingly satisfying and rewarding.

One of the Dust: An Elysian Tail’s many charms is in its references to gaming lore. From gaining health by smashing stone pillars to the 12 collectable characters which take origin from other XBLA games, there’s a sense of heritage that will be warmly received by most gamers.

There is simply too much charm, joy and downright gorgeousness about Dust: An Elysian Tail for it to be denied. Grab it today. You will love it.
