How Terrorists Created The Most Successful Games Genre Ever: Part 1
It started with one of the most tragic events in the history of mankind. The terrorism that cost thousands of lives will be remembered forever; a black stain on the page of humanity itself. And of course we all know what happened after that fateful day. War began. Troops were sent to fight for freedom and for justice in foreign policies that would change the face of all countries involved. And to such an extent would these wars and politics affect the culture of the countries involved that they would change the face of their arts, of their movies and, yes, of their games. [br] [br] War has always been a part of gaming. The second video game ever, made by Steve Russell in 1962, features war in the very title: Spacewar! And since that time there has always been a natural link between gaming and war. The most important factor of gameplay throughout the industry is to reward the player for their every action. What better sense of action / reward could one get than from pulling a trigger and seeing an explosion? It’s a mechanic that has been present in gaming since day one. [hr] [br] [br]

[hr] [br] [br] What was different about the shooting genre prior to 9/11 was that shooting games, at least for the most part, used to be fantastical in nature. Games like Space Invaders gave players the trigger / bullet mechanic but in a much more innocent manner. These Space Invaders-type games would turn into Commando / Contra style games where there was an air of believability to the story and the action. These types of shooters told a traditional story of good VS evil but one clearly far removed from politics. [hr] [br] [br] < [hr] [br] [br]
