The Best Horses in Video Games, with Argo, Epona, Shadowmere and More

We love horses. Personally, I can’t wait for my own horse to become the star of a video game (her name’s Pepper if you’re wondering). But, I might be waiting a while, so instead I thought I’d create this list of the best games with horses, a list covering all different genres and many different kinds of horses (some cute, some demonic hell beasts).

1. Epona from The Legend of Zelda:

Unless you’re some sort of evil animal-hating fool, you most probably feel completely in love with Epona when playing The Ocarina of Time. From the moment you met her and won her at Lon Lon Ranch, Epona became your best friend. She’s also your chief mode of transport around Hyrule. Let’s face it, without her, you probably wouldn’t have been able to save Zelda. For this, Epona from The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time is our number one horse in any video game.

2: Shadowmere (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion:

You are rewarded with Shadowmere in Oblivion when you complete Dark Brotherhood’s missions. Shadowmere is definitely the opposite of Epona, with red eyes and a dark mane that make her look beastly.

3: Argo (Shadow of the Colossus)

Much like Epona from Zelda, Argo becomes our best friend in Shadow of the Colossus. You spend every moment with Argo, waking, sleeping, eating with Argo and even bathing your horse. Sadly, this all leads to a tragic moment when Argo falls off a cliff, still, the time we spend with Argo is totally magical.

 4: Ruin (Darksiders):

You know that with a horse called Ruin bad things are likely to happen, especially given that Ruin isn’t a regular horse but rather a demon. You get Ruin after murdering a poor horse rider. From then on, Ruin’s there for you anytime you want. Of course, being a demon ruin needs to first explode out of the ground before you can actually go riding. . . still, great horse, even if a little weird.

 5: Invincible (World of Warcraft)

Invincible was a bit of a generous and glorifying name to give to a horse that actually dies. Still, at least you get resurrect your pet once Arthas gains the power of the Frostmourne. Being resurrected, Invincible isn’t exactly the cutest horse in the world but is instead of a pile of bones with wings.
