As a games journalist it’s not that often that you come across a genuinely new game, but Time Rifters is one of them. It’s a single player co-operative shooter. “What” you say. “how can there be a single player co-op? It doesn’t even make sense.” Time Rifters challenges you to think not just for yourself but for your teammates too.
Proton Studios’ Time Rifters is a single player in which you’re in control of your whole team. You need to destroy as many enemies as possible in each area. You enter the area alone and but will be accompanied by a ghost version of yourself when you repeat that area (similar to Super Time Force). You’ll then repeat it again with two ghosts. I say ghosts but they’re actually recordings (I’ve thought of them as ghosts ever since Mario Kart in 1992).
Time Rifters plays in both first person and side scrolling, and it involves a lot of strategy. When you get into later stages of the game the strategy becomes tougher. You’ll need to use your noggin to workout how to succeed. You’ll be awarded with a points score after each level and you can use the points you receive to purchase upgrades. There are six guns and you can upgrade individual stats too, like accuracy and power.
I have to review Time Rifters highly, mostly for one reason: it’s genuinely unique. Readers of this site will know that I value genuine innovation more than anything. Time Rifters innovates, creating an all new experience, and one which is utterly captivating.
Overall: 4.5 out of 5
